What is the Difference Between Hemp, CBD and Marijuana?

CBD, hemp and marijuana all come from the same plant genus and are very similar in appearance and smell, which can understandably cause a lot of confusion. While marijuana is legal in a handful of states in the US, hemp is currently legal grow and distribute across the entire United States.

  • Both marijuana and hemp are considered to be cannabis and naturally contain dozens of beneficial cannabinoids that work with our Endocannabinoid Systems
  • Marijuana gets you high because it has elevated levels of the psychoactive element, THC
  • Hemp is non-psychoactive as it only has trace amounts of THC (less than 0.3%) and high levels of CBD
  • You don’t need a medical marijuana card to get hemp CBD
  • Hemp CBD oil can be legally shipped directly to your home in all US States

Humans long history with hemp.

Humans naturally produce cannabinoids in our own bodies and have evolved alongside the cannabis plant genus for centuries. Historical evidence from India and China indicate that cannabis was used to address a variety of wellness needs for thousands of years and the industrial applications of hemp are well known. The human Endocannabinoid System (ECS) was discovered in the 1990’s and shed light on the critical role that plant-based phytocannabinoids can play in human health and wellness.

While things are rapidly changing, the cannabis stigma still exists and many in society still don’t recognize the difference between hemp and marijuana.

The situation is quite confusing given that our very own US Department of Health has studied the benefits of cannabis enough to patent “cannabinoids as neuroprotectants and antioxidants” in US patent 6630507 (awarded in 2003). And in World War II, the US government set up a program called “Hemp for Victory” to have US farmers grow cannabis for industrial use in the war.

Why was hemp once illegal?

In the late 1930’s, a few elite families with influence over the pharmaceutical, paper, and textile industries worked together to achieve a total cannabis ban. By focusing on the intoxicating nature of high THC cannabis. With racist undertones, they were able to also successfully ban low THC hemp to protect their economic interests..

As these industries grew, and dozens of other industries threatened by hemp developed and grew, the powers that be in government kept the new status quo of prohibition under heavy influence by industry lobbyists.

Recent Developments.

The US Farm Bill signed in 2014 establishes a clear federal distinction between marijuana and hemp in that hemp is defined as cannabis with less than 0.3% THC. This Bill for the first time allows for modern agricultural equipment to be deployed in the growing of hemp and allows for interstate shipping. Critically, this Bill allows people access to the amazing benefits of cannabis without the psychoactive effect.

How Fast Does Honest Hemp Oil Start Working?

How well or how fast Honest Hemp works for you depends on a variety of factors pertaining to your body. For some, Honest Hemp oil works immediately to address the issue at hand and for others it may take a couple of weeks of consistent usage of the right amount. This is not uncommon and should be expected. Consistent usage is the key as cannabinoids take time to build in the bodies of some people based on the individual’s own production of natural cannabinoids.

Here are some points to consider:

  • Make sure that you are taking the right amount of Honest Hemp oil. Some people have larger voids in their endocannabinoid systems (ECS) than do others. These people will require more Honest Hemp to yield the same outcome vs. people with less of an ECS deficiency. If using for general health and wellness, consider starting with a low daily dose of 5-10mg. If using for more serious mind and body stresses, consider 25-50mg of Honest Hemp oil daily.
  • Be consistent! No health regimen works if you don’t consistently follow it. Take your Honest Hemp oil regularly and don’t miss days for maximum health impact.
  • Understand the underlying cause.Depending on your situation, make sure to set your expectations clearly. CBD oil doesn’t work for everything and it is not a “miracle product,” but it should make you more comfortable and focused. For best results, make sure that you are eating right and getting enough sleep and exercise. Honest Hemp will help with mild anti-inflammatory and neurological conditions and augment your healthy lifestyle.
  • Chronic issues will require more time..Stubborn, persistent issues typically take longer to be addressed by hemp CBD oil.
  • Listen to your body. Many customers tell us that they weren’t sure their Honest Hemp oil was “working” until one day they realized that their quality of life had improved and previously difficult tasks were now a lot easier.

As with any supplement, response times for Honest Hemp will be unique per individual. If you are consistent, patient and holistic in your wellness approach, then feeling better should happen soon as your body begins to function with a more balanced immune response.

The Advantage of Whole-Plant Hemp Cannabinoids Compared to Isolated Compounds

Nature has been the key driver for medicine since it’s inception. However, western medicine prefers single compound molecules derived from plants in laboratories, not holistic whole-plant compounds that have benefited societies for millenniums. Somewhere along the way we lost the idea that Hippocrates gave us about plants: “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” While man believes he can synthesize nature, it is nature in it’s most basic form that is again showing us the way.

Today cannabinoids, hemp and CBD oils are the rage for health and wellness due to their patented (by US Department of Health) benefits as antioxidants and neuroprotectants. However, like all dietary supplements, consumers must be careful when choosing a CBD product as all are not created equally.

What Is The Difference Between Full-Spectrum Whole-Plant Hemp Cannabinoids and Isolated CBD?

“Full-spectrum”, or “whole-plant” means that the company is using the entire range of dozens of cannabinoids that are naturally found in the hemp plant rather than one molecule like typical western medicine. While most people believe that they get better, more consistent and safer results from whole-plant compounds, there are several CBD companies that sell isolated CBD compounds.

While CBD and THC are the most famous compounds found in cannabis, there are over 400 different compounds found in hemp such as, terpenes, flavonoids, terpenoids and other cannabinoids. These compounds work in harmony to create a beneficial impact naturally and without side effects.

The Entourage Effect of CBD

“The Entourage Effect” terminology originated in Israel in the 1990’s to describe the theory that the collective of natural compounds in cannabis have more efficacy by working together than does any single, isolated compound from the plant.

Again, there are dozens of cannabinoids found in hemp beyond the most famous, cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), such as cannabigerol, cannabinol, cannabichromene and tetrahydrocannabivarin. Only THC is psychoactive and as such is the key differentiator between hemp and marijuana. Only trace amounts of THC are found naturally in hemp.

All mammals have what’s called an Endocannabinoid System (ECS) and we all naturally produce cannabinoids. Sometimes our bodies get deficient in cannabinoids due to genetics or environmental stresses and thus the addition of the natural, plant-based phytocannabinoids found in hemp can be of great benefit. The ECS is believed to play a key role in regulating our neurological, central nervous, and immune systems so it is logical that it can obviously impact a multitude of health related issues.

Growing the Knowledge

In 2015 Israeli scientists discovered that the single-molecule CBD did not yield consistent benefits while, whole-plant CBD worked quickly to reduce inflammation and associated discomfort. Researchers also found that a variation in dosing of whole-plant CBD products also produced results (many needed less to achieve the same benefit).

While clearly more research is necessary to prove or disprove the Entourage Effect, there is great promise in the holistic relationship of the cannabinoids, flavonoids, and terpenes found naturally in hemp as compared to single compound molecules. Given our education and upbringing, it can be easy to dismiss nature’s ability to solve problems compared to western medicine. Fortunately, many are realizing that there is another way that is more directly related to nature and are exploring whole-plant cannabinoids.
